Royalty wars (2022-2024)

NFT royalties enforced only at the marketplace level (not chain-level). Blur 0% royalty (2022) sparked a race-to-bottom. OpenSea Operator Filter controversy. By 2024, royalties were largely optional/marginal — many collections moved to on-chain enforcement via transfer restrictions.

Stats

NFT market (~May/2026):

  • Monthly volume: ~US\( 200-400M (way down from US\) 5B+/month in 2022).
  • Active collections: thousands.
  • Total unique buyers: cumulative ~7M.

Cooling post-2022 but core community + utility-focused projects persist.

2. CryptoPunks — a historical case

Larva Labs (Matt Hall + John Watkinson), Jun/2017.

  • 10,000 unique punks (algorithmic).
  • Originally "free claim" — stock was left over for months.
  • Pioneered the "10k generative collection" template.
  • Aliens, apes, zombies (rare attributes).
  • Sale records: CryptoPunk #5822 (alien) US$ 23.7M (Feb/2022).
  • Acquired by Yuga Labs in Mar/2022 — now alongside BAYC, Meebits, Otherdeed.

3. BAYC (Bored Ape Yacht Club)

Yuga Labs, Apr/2021.

  • 10,000 apes.

  • ApeChain (Arbitrum Orbit L3) launched 2024.
  • APE token (governance).

4. Generative art

Art Blocks

Erick Calderon (Snowfro) 2020. Curated platform: artists submit code; a collector mint triggers a seed → unique generation.

  • Curated tier (highest): Fidenza (Tyler Hobbs), Ringers (Dmitri Cherniak), Chromie Squiggles (Snowfro), Sukyaba.
  • Playground, Factory: less curated.
  • Engine (now Art Blocks Studio): white-label platform.

Records: Ringers US$ 6.9M (Christie's 2023).

fxhash, Hic et Nunc (defunct), objkt

Tezos-based art platforms (lower fees + clean energy narrative).

5. ENS (Ethereum Name Service)

Nick Johnson 2017. Domain names + identity layer for Ethereum.

  • .eth names registered as ERC-721.
  • Resolution: address ↔ name; metadata, content hash, social links.
  • Free subdomains.
  • Premium auctions (short names).
  • ~3M ENS names registered (cumulative).

vitalik.eth, brantly.eth and on-chain identities

ENS became the default identity on Ethereum. Twitter/X integration via verified badges.

6. GameFi / Play-to-Earn

Axie Infinity

Sky Mavis (Vietnam) 2018. Pokemon-like creatures, breeding, battles. AXS + SLP tokens. Ronin sidechain.

Peak 2021-2022:

  • Pacific countries (Philippines) — players earning livable wages via P2E.
  • Sky Mavis valuation US$ 3B.

Decline:

  • SLP inflation → economy collapse.
  • Ronin Bridge hack (Mar/2022, US$ 625M) — Lazarus, N. Korea.
  • Player count dropped 90%.
  • Pivot to Axie: Origins (free-to-play).

Other GameFi (mostly struggled)

  • Gods Unchained: TCG, Immutable X.
  • Illuvium: open-world RPG, Aurora L2.
  • Stepn: move-to-earn (run + earn GST). Peak 2022, crash.
  • Bigtime: ARPG.
  • DeFi Kingdoms: DeFi gamified, Harmony→Avalanche.

Modern (2024-2026 traction)

  • Pixels (farming sim, Ronin).
  • Off The Grid (Gunzilla, AAA shooter).
  • Star Atlas (Solana, MMO).
  • Parallel (TCG, Base).
  • Telegram games: Notcoin, Hamster Kombat — massive user numbers via TON. Tap-to-earn of questionable depth.

Web3 gaming critique

  • "Sustainable economics" elusive.
  • "Game first, crypto invisible" thesis (Pixels, Off The Grid) — better than crypto-first.
  • Steam bans Web3 games; Epic allows them.
  • AAA blockchain games still mostly vapor (Off The Grid is an exception).

7. Sorare

Fantasy football (soccer). Player cards as NFTs. Real-life performance affects gameplay. Licensed with leagues (UEFA, NBA, MLB). US$ 700M Series B 2021. Notable relevance.

8. Real-World Assets (RWA)

9. DePIN (Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks)

Networks reward tokens to participants who provide physical resources.

Helium (HNT)

LongFi network. Hotspots (LoRaWAN) deployed by individuals → coverage rewards in HNT.

  • Peak 2021-2022: ~1M hotspots globally.
  • IoT use case lagged → pivot to Helium Mobile (5G + Wi-Fi roaming).
  • Migrated from its own L1 to Solana (2023).

Render Network (RENDER)

OTOY background. GPU rendering marketplace. Users with idle GPUs accept rendering jobs; pay in RENDER. Migrated Ethereum → Solana 2023.

Akash Network (AKT)

Decentralized cloud computing — bid on container deployments. GPU offering 2024+. Cosmos SDK chain.

10. Identity / Soulbound / Reputation

Worldcoin

Sam Altman (OpenAI) + Alex Blania, 2020-2023.

  • Orb: hardware that scans the iris → unique hash → "World ID".
  • WLD token airdrops to verified humans.
  • Controversial: privacy concerns; regulatory pushback (Spain, Portugal, Kenya banned operations).
  • Pivoted 2024-2025 toward an AI agent verification thesis.

Gitcoin Passport

Sybil-resistance via stamps (Twitter, BrightID, Proof of Humanity, etc.). Used by quadratic funding.

Proof of Humanity

Manual verification (video + vouches). Smaller scale.

ENS, Lens, Farcaster

Social/identity tokens. Farcaster Frames (interactive embeds in casts) explosive in 2024.

Soulbound Tokens (SBTs)

13. Specific risks

NFTs

  • Royalty enforcement weak.
  • IP rights: holding an NFT ≠ copyright transfer (commonly misunderstood).
  • Wash trading: artificial volume to game rewards (Blur era).
  • Phishing: signature-based wallet drainers; "blind signing" risk.
  • OFAC sanctioned wallets holding traceable.

GameFi

  • Ponzi-economics: P2E rewards from new player buy-in eventually run out.
  • Bot farming dilutes legitimate players.
  • Liquidity flight when the narrative shifts.

RWA

  • Custodial counterparty risk (BUIDL = BlackRock; if BlackRock fails, the token is worthless).
  • Regulatory: securities laws apply. Most RWA tokens are permissioned (KYC).
  • Off-chain enforcement dependency.

DePIN

  • Hardware capex for participants.
  • Token incentive sustainability post-bootstrap.
  • Quality control decentralized (Helium IoT lagged).

Identity

  • Privacy: World ID iris scanning controversial.
  • Centralization: SBT issuer trusted.
